The city centre is around 25 minutes away. Parking is the constraint rather than runway capacity, and in August it goes early.
The alternatives come into play when the trip or the timing pushes you there. Dundee Airport is 15 miles from St Andrews, compared with 55 from Edinburgh, which removes most of the drive for a golf trip, though it takes turboprops and light jets rather than anything larger. Glasgow is around an hour west by road and the usual fallback in peak weeks when EDI parking has gone. For Gleneagles and the Highlands, a helicopter transfer from EDI is often quicker than driving.
